| www.toothpastefordinner.com: Coolest techy/geeky/nerdy comic website. Sometimes even I don't understand the humour
So I'm done all my classes of University and ready to graduate!....well, that was back in December. Sometimes I miss all those harsh moments of coming up with weird and stupid design ideas, pulling the rare all-nighters, and praying before presentations like it was a life or death thing. Most importantly it was great to have the discipline. And now that I'm just working from home that discipline has diminished slightly; things have changed again. FOR ONE...I actually seem to work better under tight schedules now. Otherwise with so much time to do drafts for websites, I'll just have fun, play settlers, and not worry about it till the night before....WHEN I'm playing settlers (again).
So like I said, the past two-ish months have been nice because it's a break from things. I'm able to focus on prepping my portfolio, spending time with my girlfriend, sleeping in, working with other clients besides SFU and Eqqy, and prepping for the Communications Ministry for church. I've yet to start the guitar lessons yet but that'll be soon. I have this thought that I'm in my prime, so I've gotta learn and do more before my brain and ability/opportunities go downhill or become stagnant.
Anyways, the real blessing in these months have given me time to think about shifting my mindset from being a university student and actually start working (which I was all excited and impatient about before, but now I'm just confused sometimes). So I'm still freelancing Websites, Graphic Design, and Photography aside from working with SFU and Eqqy. I had those little moments of thinking about applying to Full-time or Part-time positions out there at companies or agencies, but it's still preparation time right now......or afraid to move on time. It's exactly like a) proceeding with design ideas and b) how active our faith is. I remember in third year with Wayne we did our weekly checkup with one of our teachers about our design ideas. Not being able to settle on one, he commented that we'll never be able to decide which one is best, even if we keep testing, keep analyzing, keep doing focus groups. We just have to pick one and move forward with that. OF course it's the same thing in our lives, we can over-analyze things, we can TRY to prepare ourselves, but inevitably we have to face that chasm and take a leap to the other side. BUT the cool thing about this is that once I started to think about this, God does his thing and kinda affirms it. Within a week I've had 3 offers for full-time and part-time jobs. Not right away, but opportunities and doors open to consider. Something as small as that, I still find my amazing God working the little details that's just telling me to "move forward" with something. It's part of commitment.
So once Charles left for RIM, I was asked to be on board to give the SIAT website a face-lift. It doesn't really solve much of the interaction problems of the whole site, but it somehow gives it a better look and feel for the prospective students. Well, and we moved aside from the old design which was an exact rip off of another school - and they hired a company to do it too. I'm still working on the subpage graphics to get ready for the SFU surrey open house on Thurs. And since now's Tuesday, I only really have one day to finish it all. yay.
The past semester I took the follow-up class to the Italy Field School. It was pretty much a 5-hour sweat-shop on a friday afternoon, working to process the information we gathered in Italy onto a website. It all came down to fixing the interviews, putting up our projects, sorting images, and just putting the whole italy experience of ours for the public to see. It was time consuming, but I do miss the times we had. The photo above is my bio on the research page.
I took CMNS375 and 478 the last semester. These were final products of the main projects in the class. the 375 Class was of Magazine publishing and I got to work with an awesome group to develop and idea for a subculture/lifestyle magazine for local art scene in Vancouver. I was the art director so mainly incharge of the design. The second one (on the right) is DEJINE - a magazine that showcases all of the design work from SFU. Wayne and I came up and did this as our 478 brochure project. In the end, the teacher loved it and asked us to pitch it to the departments of SIAT and Communications. AND now there's going to be two issues per year to showcase the student projects and work from the previous semester. The SFU Surrey Open House has printed 2000 copies distributed for Free, so if you're there, pick one up. We'll probably set up a web version later too. That's somewhat of another project I'm figuring out.
some project work for the communications 478 class
a thank-you card designed as part of a self-promotional package for the class.
A Photoshoot done for Mabel and her friend Sarah. Was trying to do the whole bright-celebrity-lights kind of thing again.

When Poh was back for the winter holiday we set up a time to meet together all 5 of us again and have a small photoshoot - since last time David was not int he photo. It was probably one of the last times we'll see each other for a long time. Since two of them are in ontario and the three of us here are either schooling or working too. I miss them. We filmed a thing aroudn the table like the 70's show hahah. And we've had some skype times. oh moments.

| Airbrushing Fabric Paint is the New Iron-On
So Tintin being the experimentalist he is, ebayed a $60 model car airbrush spray gun and started spraying t-shirts. Pros are it goes on smooth, no wierd "HEY I KNOW THIS IS AN IRON ON BECAUSE OF ITS MATERIAL" feel, and I guess it just feels like an advancement from those $13/pack as opposed to a dollar a bottle of fabric paint.
It's a simple procedure of going to get fabric paint at michaels, doing the what instruction tells you, and having it sprayed onto your stencil. Stenciling the vinyl takes a long time - so I've been doing the simple flat one-colored graphic vectors since a) I don't have that much spare time, b) I haven't really figured out how to do the details (of shape and/or colors) yet, and c) if I'm impatient I can squeegie or press it on with a card. But Tins has done some pretty sweet tshirts. And from doing this I really admire his patience and attention to detail (in this particular aspect).
It's cool to share interests, so when your friend goes to HK for 6 months, you can borrow their machine to make shirts. Anyways, here's a few I've done so far. Still waiting for free time to make a couple of other ones.
I made this as a surprise present when I was away in Italy for her. The paint is white fluffy paint too so when you add some steam and heat from an iron right afterwards the paint will puff/stick up. First shirt I sprayed when Tom, Willy, Tins and I met up to see each other when Tom came back and I was about to leave for Italy. The concept is not original. I saw this on a site somewhere and I thought I'd make my own. It says love, and if you look into the reflection it would say hate. cooooooools.
I wanted to spray something on my zipups, so I figured since I don't wear the cranberry color one THAT much I might as well put something on it. This was the first one without Tins' supervision :p Not bad not bad.
HAVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER to make this. and it took forever to make this too. I feel like a historical typographer after stenciling letter by letter hahaha. Anyways, this is gold on a dark cyan blue shirt. I wanted to make this because I saw someone's photo and he had a JLA shirt with the new logo too. There were those comic shops that sell the shirt but obviously it's oversized and not in the colors I want. Here I go. Next up will be JSA. Geektastic. YEAH!
So in terms of clothing, I'm past that all American Apparel stage and moved onto something "I FIND" is cool. I think it's a brand from Japan but sold only in the UK. It's called SUPERDRY. and I've been liking it because of the cool embroidery on the jackets and because it says Super. Sometimes the stuff is sold at Hills but it's way overpriced. This has been my online orders lately :p
Now I've got no use of those 3 packs of Iron-On sheets. hah.
